Prosthetic Lab in Milot, Haiti Update – Spring 2013

A prosthetic lab was created in Jacksonville by using an old shipping container.  APO helped with the creation of the lab along with the great support of Jacksonville community.  This lab was sent to Milot, Haiti, right after the earthquake to serve a large number of people who lost their limbs.  Many visiting Prosthetist/Orthotist from the U.S.were able to take care of the patients immediate needs.  Since then 2 local Haitians are being trained by the learning program of Don Bosco University as Prosthetists/Orthotists. Oscar Bermudez, CP from El Salvador is living in Haiti for a stint of 2 years to work and teach the students.

The lab has produced 42 artificial limbs, 15 braces, 20 repairs or replacements of existing prostheses and has a waiting list of 10 patients who need prosthetics in this year alone.
